Deciding to Go on Medicare Now or Later
Turning 65 often means stepping into the world of Medicare. However, there are many things you should consider before making that decision.
Many people often continue working past age 65 and have the option of keeping their work benefits in place. Others may keep working but want to see if going on Medicare may save them money since their work benefits have become more expensive. And still others know they are no longer going to work and will need to enroll in Medicare full-time for their healthcare coverage.
For those continuing to work and keeping their workplace benefits, the better option at 65 may be to sign up for Medicare and Part A only. Once you enroll in Medicare Part B, you will start paying Medicare monthly premiums. In 2026 the minimum Medicare Part B premium is $202.90/month. If you don't need the coverage, you can save enrolling in Part B until you need health insurance. As long as you have creditable coverage at work, you will not be penalized for delaying your Part B.
For those continuing to work with costly workplace benefits, we can help you do the analysis which allows you to see if keeping your benefits or going on Medicare while continuing to work is the better option. And if you have an HSA account, you may have some other decisions to make.
For those of you who are ready to go on Medicare, you get started by going to https://www.ssa.gov/medicare/sign-up and applying for your Medicare card and Parts A&B. You are allowed to apply 3 months prior to your birthday month, the month of your birthday, and 3 months following your birthday.
Medicare Can be Complex
Understanding the difference between Parts A (Hospital), B (Medical), and D (Prescription Drug), along with knowing when and how to enroll, can feel overwhelming. And then there’s the question of whether a Medicare Advantage Plan or Supplemental Coverage plus Part D Prescription coverage is right for you. And how about dental, vision and hearing? Are they covered by Medicare? Technically they are not; however, the Medicare Advantage option often offers these as additional benefits.
To make this process easier, we take the time to explain your options in clear, simple terms, so you can make informed decisions. We also help you understand additional coverage options like dental, vision, and prescription plans, making sure you’re protected in all the right ways. With our guidance, navigating Medicare becomes less about guesswork and more about confidence
